Recording Demos

The Demos Screen is reached by pressing F6 from the Game Screen or the Room Editor.

To record a demo:

  1. While playing a game, go to the room in which you wish to record your demo.
  2. Press F5 and type a description.
  3. Your demo is now recording.  Perform whatever actions you want.  Exiting the Game Screen or rewinding moves in the room past where you initiated demo recording will automatically stop recording.
  4. Press F5 when you are finished to stop recording and save the demo.

You can also set DROD to automatically record demos when you conquer a room or die.  After setting the appropriate options from the Settings Screen, it is not necessary to control demo recording.  When you have conquered a room or died, a demo will automatically be saved.

Quick demo recording:

Alternately, press F4 to instantly record a demo of play in the current room up to the present moment.

To watch or delete a demo:

  1. While playing a game or using the room editor, go to the room in which you began recording your demo.
  2. Press F6 to view the Demos Screen.
  3. A list of demos recorded in this room, if any, will be displayed on the left side of the screen.  Detailed information for the selected demo appears on the right.  Select the demo you would like to watch or delete. Click the "Display all demos in level" checkbox to show all demos recorded in the room's level in the list at once.
  4. Demo viewing commands. Click the "Watch" button to watch the selected demo. While viewing a demo, press Space or Keypad-5 to pause and unpause playback, the Up arrow to speed up playback and the Down arrow to slow playback (each keypress is cumulative). Press the Left and Right arrows to pause the demo action and step through the demo one turn at a time. Pressing Space or Keypad-5 returns playback to normal. Press Keypad-7 to toggle replaying demo moves at a uniform speed instead of the author's original play speed.
  5. Click "Delete" to permanently delete the highlighted demo. If it is a demo spanning multiple rooms, you will be prompted to either delete the entire multiroom playback or only the segment from the current room. Click "Delete All" to delete all demos currently showing in the list box. When deleting all demos, you will also be prompted whether you want to delete all other user demos recorded for the hold.
  6. If you are the hold author, you will have the option of checking "Show from title screen". This will show the selected demo from the Title Screen when your hold is active. The order the demos are shown from the Title Screen is determined by the order the demos are marked.
  7. When you are done, click the "Return to Game" button.

Importing/exporting demos:

Recorded demos can be shared with fellow DRODers. Click "Export" on the Demos screen to save the selected demo to disk. Click "Export All" to save all demos shown in the demo list into a single file. Click "Import" to load a demo file on disk into your version of the game.

Downloading demos from CaravelNet:

Registered CaravelNet users are able to view the top scored demos for each room once they have conquered it. When the "Connect to CaravelNet" option is turned on in the Settings screen, DROD will automatically download a list of the best scores for the current room. Select one and press "Download" to download the score demo from CaravelNet. Once the download has completed and the demo has been imported into your game, select the level or room the demo was recorded in. It will appear in the upper list of local demos and you may watch it by selecting it and pressing "Watch".

Submitting demos to CaravelNet:

Registered CaravelNet users may submit selected demos authored by them for scoring on CaravelNet. Select one or more demos from the list and click the Upload button to submit them. In order to upload demos, the current hold must be a hold published on CaravelNet.
